Fatigue and Low Energy — Being Tired Is Common, Not Normal
Tired isn't a personality. It's a signal. When sleep doesn't fix it and labs come back 'normal,' your body is asking a question nobody's answered yet.
If you wake up tired, push through the day on caffeine, and crash by 3 p.m. — and your bloodwork keeps coming back “normal”. You are not lazy and you are not imagining it.
Fatigue is one of the most dismissed patterns we see at The Wellness Way - Mason. The standard answer is “you’re stressed,” “you’re just busy,” or “your labs look fine, get more sleep.” If sleep alone fixed it, you’d already feel better. The problem is upstream of the bedroom.
You are not broken. Your battery is being drained somewhere you haven’t looked.
Symptoms Patients Describe to Us
If you’re nodding along to most of these, your body is asking you to look closer:
- Wired but tired. Exhausted but can’t fall asleep, or crash hard and still wake unrefreshed.
- Mid-afternoon energy collapse that demands caffeine or sugar.
- Brain fog and slow recall that worsens through the day.
- Heavy limbs after exercise that take days to recover from.
- Hair shedding, cold hands, slow digestion alongside the fatigue.
- Mood dips: irritability or low motivation that wasn’t always there.
Many of these get explained away as “just life” or “just aging.” Common, but not normal.
What Most Doctors Miss
Standard fatigue workups usually mean a CBC, a TSH, maybe an iron and a vitamin D. If those fall inside reference range, you’re told you’re fine.
The problem: reference ranges are wide, and “normal” is not always “optimal.” A TSH at the high end of normal can still mean a sluggish thyroid. Ferritin at 30 is technically not anemic but is functionally low for energy. A flat cortisol curve looks fine on a single morning blood draw. But maps a clear pattern of adrenal dysregulation when tested across the day.
A full picture asks better questions:
- Is the thyroid converting T4 to active T3, or stalling?
- What does the cortisol curve look like across 24 hours?
- Are mitochondria — your cellular batteries. Supplied with the cofactors they need?
- Are gut and food triggers stealing energy through chronic inflammation?
- Is blood sugar swinging hard enough to crash you?
When we run the full panel, we frequently find adrenal patterns, thyroid conversion issues, nutrient gaps, or food triggers that a basic CBC could never surface.
The 3 T’s Behind Fatigue
Fatigue rarely happens in isolation. The Wellness Way 3 T’s framework helps us look at why your battery is draining:
- Thoughts: chronic stress floods the body with cortisol, which eventually flattens. The HPA axis loses its rhythm. The brake and the gas pedal stop coordinating.
- Toxins. Heavy metals, mold, processed-food chemicals, and overworked detox pathways drain mitochondrial output. Cells can’t make energy when the inputs are dirty.
- Traumas: old injuries, sleep debt, surgical history, and chronic inflammation each add to the cumulative load. The body keeps paying interest on debts you forgot it had.

Our Testing Approach
We use comprehensive lab work, not a single morning blood draw. Depending on your story, your panel may include:
- Adrenal cortisol pattern: DUTCH or 4-point saliva to map the full curve
- Complete thyroid panel. TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, antibodies
- Comprehensive nutrient panel. Ferritin, B12, vitamin D, magnesium, B-complex
- Fasting insulin and glucose: blood-sugar drivers of energy crashes
- Inflammation markers and food sensitivity testing when chronic inflammation is suspected
Tests are recommended, never required. We walk through cost and rationale before ordering anything.
Working Alongside Your Medical Team
If you’re already on thyroid medication, an antidepressant, or any prescription supporting your energy or mood — we don’t change it. Medication decisions stay with your prescribing physician.
