What Most Doctors Miss

When mood or focus issues come up in primary care, the typical workup is brief — TSH, CBC, maybe a vitamin D. Followed by a referral to psychiatry or a prescription for an SSRI or stimulant.

That’s appropriate for some patients. For many, it skips a foundational step: the body systems that feed the brain. A brain running on inflammation, nutrient deficiency, hormonal chaos, or gut dysfunction will struggle no matter what medication is on board.

A complete picture asks:

  • B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3 index. Direct neurotransmitter cofactors; deficiency mimics anxiety/depression
  • Comprehensive thyroid panel: hypothyroidism mimics depression, hyperthyroidism mimics anxiety
  • DUTCH cortisol curve: flat or inverted curves correlate with mood patterns
  • Sex hormone panel. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone all affect mood
  • Inflammation markers, neuro-inflammation is real and often invisible on basic panels
  • Comprehensive food allergy testing: gluten, dairy, eggs are top neurological triggers in sensitive patients
  • Gut health stool analysis. Dysbiosis affects mood through the gut-brain axis

The 3 T’s Behind Brain and Mood Issues

  • Thoughts. Chronic stress is corrosive to brain function. Sustained cortisol elevation shrinks the hippocampus, disrupts neurotransmitter balance, and rewires the threat response. Stress isn’t separate from the body.
  • Toxins: heavy metals, mold exposure, food sensitivities, environmental neurotoxins all affect cognition and mood. The brain is one of the most chemically sensitive organs in the body.
  • Traumas. Physical inflammation, sleep deprivation, and chronic pain all affect how the brain processes mood and attention. The mind isn’t separate from the spine.

We do not treat or replace psychiatric care. For any patient whose mental health is being actively managed by a psychiatrist, psychologist, or therapist, our role is complementary, not a replacement.

That means:

  • We don’t change psychiatric medications. Those decisions stay with your prescribing physician, period.
  • We don’t tell you to stop therapy. We support it.
  • We don’t claim to “cure” anxiety, depression, ADHD, or any psychiatric diagnosis. Those are clinical territories that require clinical care.

What we do: support the foundational systems. Gut-brain axis, nutrient status, inflammation, hormone balance, nervous-system regulation: that influence how the brain operates day to day. When those foundations are solid, psychiatric care often works better. Sometimes patients and their psychiatrists find they need less medication over time. That conversation goes through the prescribing doctor.
